You should start walking on the first day after surgery. Increase your walking distance and walking speed depending on how your body feels in the weeks after surgery.
When walking, you should aim for this to feel like ‘moderate level’ exercise.
This means you should feel that it is an effort but you should not be so out of breath that you cannot still have a conversation.
Walking is the most important part of your recovery.
Try to include walking in your routine daily life in the weeks following surgery.
Again, ‘listen’ to your body and gradually build up your activities.
If you have access to, and feel safe to, you can consider other forms of exercise. Cycling and gym work will increase your heart rate and help you to gradually build up your strength in the weeks after your operation.
